Dear Jason,
I was wondering what I should do to make my admission essay "sparkle". It's so hard to make the admissions committee like you just from a piece of plain white paper...ugh. What did you do? I have to write an essay about my community for a top college. But the thing is I don't really know what makes my community special. Yes I have my family and friends, but I don't know how to write an essay about them that is actually about me.
Then even funner is when I have to write an essay about my future major. I want to become a doctor, but I want to major in psychology and literature. How do I explain that? So, any sagacious tips?
Lastly, when I finish my essay, would you be willing to read it? Thanks a ton for being my personal guidance counselor. My counselor has no idea what he is doing...literally. I mean he thinks no one in the entire state of Florida would want to go to college anywhere but Florida.... so ok...thanks and bye for now.
Sincerely,
Stuck in My Essay
-----
Dear Stuck,
I faced the same dilemma last year (as I'm sure most other students do as well). It won't sparkle until either: A. you have that sudden light bulb moment B. it is done and you feel like your essay has come together. So you have to write about your community? I'm sure you've been involved in your community during high school from doing projects like tutoring or helping senior citizens or something as simple as supporting your school at events like football games or dance competitions. Try to reflect on your role and impact in/on the community to convey what the community is like as well as who you are as individual. That will also show the adcom (admissions committee) how you will contribute to their community.
Your desired majors are great assets because they are passions. The committee will be glad to see that you are a well-rounded person and not like every other pre-med applicant. So don't feel like you have to explain yourself so much as being proud of your interests. Would be glad to look over the essay when you're done.
Sincerely,
Jason
