Question
Hello,
I have a quick question... Do you think that paying for SAT prep is a smart thing to do?
Sincerely,
Student XYZ

Answer
Dear Student XYZ,
Generally, no. Despite ads and marketing materials, most commercial programs don't make a difference or make a minimal one from objective research and anecdotes I've heard from friends. All the money-back guarantees just get you another round of their ineffective SAT prep.
However, if you need A LOT of help and have major trouble with self-discipline, then paid SAT prep makes sense by psychologically motivating you and providing a physically present motivator, if you get a tutor. I paid $20 for a book with practice tests and then just invested time. That's just my 2 cents though; of course I would say this, I believe in free test prep!
Sincerely,
Jason
