Can I make up for a couple mediocre years? And what if I want to be pre-med?

Question

Couple things. I didn't do so hot freshman and sophomore year. Will picking up the slack these next couple years make enough of a difference to colleges?

Also, I want to study medicine. Any thoughts?

Answer

Doing better this year and next will obviously help. It's actually good to show progress and 'growth' like that. Not necessarily better than 4 years of perfection haha but it's a close 2nd, and certainly beats being mediocre the whole time, or worse yet, getting worse grades with time.

If you want to do med, honestly you can go almost anywhere in my opinion. Nobody really looks at where your degree is from in your office except maybe a cleaning lady. And it's a lot of time in school, so you want to be somewhere that will be enjoyable and affordable...cause 8 years of tuition can hurt for most people. Then again, going to a great undergrad college will make it easier if/when you apply to med school...if you do well there. Ha I guess there are a lot of if's, but suppose you get into a 6 year med program straight at say, the Univ of Miami (FL), then you're home free. My cousin did that program and then got a spot at Emory for rotations, which I hear is really good.

So anyway, try to visit colleges and find somewhere you think you fit in well, will enjoy and has a good rep so med school will be easier to get into. Does that help narrow down or focus what you are going to look for in a school? If you go to either Columbia or Cornell, and do well, applying to med school should be a breeze. Premed, though, is hard. At school those kids definitely have less social time and stress more. But if it's what you want, you gotta do it. I'm studying sociology...it's not AS intense.
